A11y, What it means in Accessibility?

A11Y – In the accessibility community, you’ll often come across the term “a11y.” It’s a numeronym, a numerical abbreviation, where the number 11 represents the eleven letters between the “a” and the “y” in the word “accessibility.” So, a11y means accessibility.

While “a11y” can refer to all aspects of accessibility, it’s most commonly used in the context of digital accessibility, which is the practice of designing and developing digital experiences that are usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. This includes:

  • Websites
  • Mobile apps
  • Desktop software
  • Video games
  • PDFs and other digital documents

My Focus: Web and Mobile Accessibility

As a website expert and proud member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), my work is focused on web and mobile accessibility. This involves ensuring that people with disabilities can navigate and interact with digital content using assistive technologies (AT) like screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice input tools, and more.

Accessibility is not just a feature, it is a fundamental right. By building with accessibility in mind, we create inclusive, equitable digital spaces for everyone.
